学术兴趣

As a social 和 cultural historian, I am interested in gender, sexuality, 和 the American West. Much of my work focuses on questions of identity 和 memory. 我的第一本书 Rodeo as Refuge, Rodeo as Rebellion (堪萨斯大学出版社, 2020) looks at race- 和 group-specific rodeos in the United States, 包括黑, 土著, 夏威夷, 还有同性恋牛仔竞技圈. Rodeo’s ties to the past allow people to connect to it in a way that is deeply personal 和 to see it as culturally 和 historically relevant. 正因为如此, race- 和 group-specific rodeos not only have continued far beyond the time of segregation, but have become even more relevant 为 the communities that support them.

我的下一本书计划, under contract with the University of Washington Press, is co-authored with Rebecca Scofield at the University of Idaho. This work examines the gay rodeo circuit more specifically. Participants in gay rodeo created a different queer sexual subculture that straddled the urban 和 rural. Gay rodeo also has been an arena filled with tensions between offering an inclusive environment (为 men 和 women, 为 trans 和 cis competitors, 和 more) 和 one that still was created by 男同性恋者  男同性恋者. 前ics examined include hypermasculinity, 性与艾滋病, 变装皇后和夏令营活动, 政治和消费者权力, 和 the position of women within this setting.

作为一名公共历史学家, I am interested in promoting using local history as a teaching tool 为 facilitating student engagement, 和 I publish on profession-based learning project design with a focus on undergraduate students working collaboratively on projects with community partners. I have led oral history projects to gather the stories of long-time Northwest employees, 校园里的退伍军人, 和诺达威县的农民. 这些 口述历史 are housed at the Northwest University Archives 和 at the Nodaway County Historical Society. I have also worked with students to prepare National Register nominations, document local historic cemeteries, research 和 design museum exhibits, 和 create various websites 和 digital history projects that document local histories.
